NAVAL DEFENCE.
POLICY OF CANADA. BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT • OTTAWA, Sept. 2. A telegram from Quebec says that Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Field, in an interview, said there is a growing sentiment in Canada in favour of Canadian participation in a scheme of naval defence, and a practical expression would be given to the sentiment when the Canadian overseas export trade had assumed larger proportions. He said he based this opinion on conversations with Canadians all over the Dominion. He realised the question was now largely one of expense. Canada had other difficult problems, and until these were solved the people perhaps would not realise the immediate necessity of protecting the trade routes. ■
The squadron sailed from Canada during the afternoon.
