LICENSING MATTERS.
EGMONT COMMITTEE
The adjourned annual meeting.of the Egmont Licensing Committee uas held in the Elthanv Courthouse jester day. Present: Messrs A. M. Mowlem (chairman), N. C. lnnes, and T. P. Hughson. The permanent transfer of the Okaiawa Hotel from Charles L. Kasper to Harold Kasper was approved. ... Adjourned application for a renewal of the license of the Waimate Hotel (Manaia) and for a temporary transfer from F. Coob to R. J. Freeman was next dealt .with. Mr H. L. Spratt (Hawera) represented the owner. Mr Lovelock, of Palmerston North. The renewal of the license had been held over from the June meeting, to allow of certain recommendations made by the police and health inspector being carried out. Sergeant Henry, on behalf of the police, objected to the renewal of the license on the grounds that the hotel needed repairing. ■Mr Spratt said his client had certain of the repairs in hand. It was questionable if a renewal was necessary. Another thing that had delayed I^he repairs was that arrangements had to be made for finance. Sergeant Henry said at the time he put in his report the premises were not in a state of repair. He could not see that there was any attempt being made' to go on with the necessary work. Constable Scanned stated in evidence that lie had visited the hotel recently and detailed the repairs which in his opinion were badly needed. In answer to Mr Spratt, witness said he understood the contractor for the work had been hung up for timber. T. Coleman, inspector of health, and K. R. Lloyd, builder and contractor, also give evidence as to the necessity for repairs which they specified. The chairman said the bench had to consider the general public and conform with the provisions of the Licensing Act. The landlord had apparently allowed the house to get into bad d'srepair. The necessary repairs had been ordered to be done in June, but had not yet been done. The bench would grant the temporary transfer, hut adjourn the application for a renewal until the December meeting. If the whole of the repairs and renovations recommended by the police and the inspector of health had not then been satisfactorilv carried out the license would he refused. Mr Spratt said the whole matter of the repairs needed would now receive the direct personal attention of the owner, and the work would be pushed on. —Argus.
