FISHING.
MEETING AT OPUNAKE,.
About 20 fishermen were, present at the’Tneeting held at Opunake on Wednesday evening last. Mr E. Julian presided. The chairman said that the meeting had been convened to further the interests of shipping in the district. Local fishermen felt that they were not perhaps getting such services as they should oil account of being on the boundary line between the Hawera and New Plymouth Societies. Air Grover, president- of the Taranaki Society, wlio was present, said lie was pleased to have seen the lake; and race and he considered the local anglers were to be envied. If they had the Opunake Lake at New Plymouth it would mean a great deal to them in the way of license money, and Air Bell, who was in charge of the liberation of fry, was so impressed with its possibilities that- he had decided to send forward 40,060 Rainbow fry for liberation in it, and this number would be sent forward each year. After some discussion, it was decided to leave' the lake open for fishing with any. kind of bait, the opinion being that if all kinds of bait were allowed a very much larger numlje.r of licenses would he taken out-, and as the society had promised such a liberal supply each year there would be plenty of fish for all. It was decided that the Taranaki Society be requested to send only licenses for sale in Opunake to ' Air Baker, the opinion being that the local committee would then know who had licenses. The matter of poaching, which is prevalent in the district, was discussed, and it was unanimously resolved that the local committee do all in its power to bring about the conviction of ooachers.
An executive committee, consisting of Messrs E. Julian, J. P. Burton, I>r. Matt, AY. Gunson, Reg. Baker, G. Clouston. A. Aitken. H. Barites' F. Loescli. G. Bavlis and A. J. Brennan, was set up, and it was arranged that they meet on the last Friday in each month at Air Brennan’s office to discuss any matters relating to fishing; also any license holders who would oa.ro to be present would he welcome; at such meetings.
It was resolved that a levy of 2s 6d lie made on license holders in the district to> meet any out of Docket- expenses the committee might he faced with from time to time.
Air R. Baker was appointed as the committee’s delegate to attend the meetings of the Taranaki Council. Air F. Julian was appointed chairman. of the committee, and Air A. J. Brennan secretarv.
Arrangements 'were made for the distribution of Rainbow fry on Sunday next in the Okahu River and the Opunake lake.—Opunake Times.
