FREIGHT RATES INCREASED. X BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT SYDNEY, Aug. 29. The Steamship Owners Association has decided to increase inter-State Steamer freights ten per cent, from Monday next. According to the Commonwealth Statistician 274- industrial disputes occurred in the Commonwealth in 1923, involving 76,321 people. The estimated loss of working days was 1,145,977 and wages £1,275,506. NATIONAL DEBT REDUCTION. MELBOURNE,'Aug. 30. The first annual report of the National Debt Commission presented to the Senate states that the national debt has been reduced «by £3,001,596 as the result of the past year’s operations. ‘ - SHIPPING FAILURE. Received August 30, 9.50 a.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 30. As an outcome: of a long series of losses in the shipping trade between Australia and Cnina, the Australian China Shipping Company is passing into liquidation. The estimated losses since the inception of the line in 1918 amount to £IBO,OOO. Recently the hank foreclosed on a mortgage over the company’s steamers.—Ans.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
