TARANAKI LANDS. WEEDS TAKING POSSESSION. LARGE AREA AFFECTED. (By Telegraph—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. A pointed warning to the Govern,--merit that effective aid must lie rendered to settlers in the backblocks of Taranaki if they are to cope'with the weeds was given by Mr Ma'sters in the House to-night. His opinion was described by the Premier as quite correct, Mr Massey adding that it was one of the most serious difficulties which the Government was bound to face. He had seen this hill country seven years ago, and he understood it was much worse to-day. Probably 200.000 acres were affected by bracken and weeds, which were taking charge of the cleared lands. Mr Corrigan: I think there is more. Mr Massey agreed that this was quite possible. He considered it the duty of the Government to tackle it, and if it meant spending £SOOO on successful experiments in regrassing it would Ire one of the best speculations ever made. There must be no halfmeasures over those Taranaki lands.
