NOT GUILTY
CHARGE OF MATRICIDE
8Y GABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT
Received Aug 29, 12.5 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 28. The jury, on which were five women, unanimously returned a verdict that King was not guilty, after twentvseven minutes’ deliberation.
King throughout maintained an unconcerned demeanour, and unflinchingly faced a searching hour and a half’s cro.ss - examination. The defence's theory was tba-t the c-beese touched the arsenic on the pantry shelf. A feature of the case was the address of prosecuting counsel, who declared that King intended to poison his father, but the mother was poisoned through eating food intended for the father. The motive of the crime was the animus of the son against his father for compelling him to be an accountant instead of a. chemist. Counsel declared that the evidence of accused was characterised by deliberate falsehoods.
The judge, summing up, said the charge appeared to be inherently improbable.
The announcement of the verdict was loudly applauded, and the court had to be cleared.—A.N.Z.C.A.
