MOTOR BILL.
LICENSE FEES
APPLICATION OF REVENUE.

WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. The Motor Vehicles Bill, which at the present time is being discussed by most local bodies throughout the Dominion, sets out the annual license fees to be collected from motorists. With the exception of motor drivers license fees, payable under the proposed Bill, the whole of the revenue collected will be paid into the main highways revenue- fund and the amount so collected is to be utilised towards paying the board’s one-third share of maintenance on highways. Local authorities have to provide the remaining two-thirds towards the cost of maintenance on roads which have been declared main highways, and the whole of the cost of maintenance of all other roads.
The ever increasing heavy traffic throws heavy charges on local authorities in maintaining its roads, and the amounts required in this direction will be met if the proposals by the Main Highways Board are given effect to. lhe proposals provide for annual charges to be imposed on owners of heavy; and commercial vehicles, and the whole of the amounts collected will be retained by local authorities. lhe rates of licenses for heavy motor traffic proposed by the Main Highways Board are: Up to one ton, io, one to two tons, £l3; two to three tons £24; three to four tons!
