NEW TRIAL ORDERED. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS WELLINGTON, Aug. 28: After the jury had asked Victor Bond, charged with forgery, how he had become possessed of £l4, which he had banked one day and withdrawn the same day, and the prisoner had explained the circumstances, the foreman intimated that the jury could not agree, and a new trial was ordered ror the next session. Bail was allowed in a personal recognisance of LIOO and o-ne surety ol a like amount. THEFT FROM GISBORNE, Aug. 28. Raymond Woodward and Albert Edward Duncan, two young men from Auckland, who arrived here just prior to the recent Gisborne steeplechase meeting, Hvere found guilty in the Supreme Court to-day of four charges of theft from boarders of amounts totalling £B7 in the Royal Hotel, and one of receiving £53 in money, which was dishonestly obtained. Sentence was deferred.
In the course of his evidence Duncan said a watch and chain that had been in bis possession came into his hands from a theft.
To the detective: I decline to say how I got it.
The detective: Did the theft take place at Metzer Bros.’, Auckland?” Accused: Yes.
