A SERIOUS CHARGE.

At Stratford Court yesterday, before Messrs C. D. Sole and J. McCluggage, J.P.’s, a young man, a resident of Stratford, was charged with performing an illegal operation on a young unmarried woman, a resident of Havvera. Mr P. O’Dea, instructed by Mr R. R. Tyrer, of Stratford, appeared (with Mr Tyrer) for the accused, while Mr A. Coleman watched the interests of one of the witnesses. This witness,on being examined by Detective-Ser-geant Cooney, who prosecuted, refused to answer several questions on the grounds that his answers might incriminate him. On the conclusion of the taking of the depositions the accused was committed for trial, pleading not guilty and reserving his defence. The names of all parties in the ease were ordered by the court to be suppressed. This is a most unusual type of case in Taranaki, and not for several years has there been such a case, in Taranaki before the criminal sessions.
