CONFESSION BY REGISTRAR
COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE,
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.! DUNEDIN, Aug. 26. Alexander Robert. Kennedy, registrar of births, deaths and marriages, pleaded guilty to-day to the theft on April 7 and other dates between then and August 7 of sums totalling £Bl 10s 6d, these representing marriage entries and passport fees not accounted for. , The evidence showed that the accused surrendered himself and sent for an auditor, giving the latter a list showing the numbers of missing certificates. ,
Detective Beer stated that accused, when he surrendered, was in a very nervous condition, and described how on two occasions he had made preparations to take his life, handing over a pea-rifle and cartridges, which he had intended to use. The accused’s own statement was that since being in Dunedin he had a serious illness, involving financial difficulties, which tempted him to appropriate the money. He had been transferred to Wellington, and then resolved to disclose the whole matter to the Under-Seeretarv. Accused was committed for sentence.
