STRONG COMMENT.
TREATMENT OF MAORIS
BY INDIAN HERBALIST
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 26. At the inquest on a Maori child, liefore Mr Hunt, S.M., strong comment was made on tire practice of Abraham Walley Mohammed Salaman, described as an Indian herbalist, in business at Auckland for about five years. Dr. Peter Buck said that Salaman did incalculable harm amongst the Maoris, who believed he was a fully qualified doctor, and came to him from long distances with cases that were practically hopeless. In two instances, this and a previous one, the patients had died. There was a point of Maori honour that the dead must go back to where they came from for burial, and all the expense had to lie borne by the Health Department. 1 The coroner commented severely, saying that people should be protected from men of this sort. To Salaman he said :“You give up dealing with Maoris. I am going to have this stopped.” Mr Hunt further said that Salaman should be prosecuted. Dr. Buck said the Health Department could not prosecute successfully, quoting a previous case which had broken down.
