At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Lionel Meredith was charged under the' Defence Act with failing to attend parade and failing to return Government property. Accused had teen previously fined for breaches of the Defence Act. On the present charges defendant was fined £3 and costs on:the first and 10s and costs on the second charge, and he was also deprived of civil rights for a term of five years. Magistrate Mowlem spoke strongly on the subject of young men. evading their v • responsibilities , in, this regard, and said Meredith appeared to he of the type who did not seem to have any regard for duty to country. If a • man failed m bis duty to his country he was npt worthy to be allowed a vote.
