LAND SETTLEMENT.
THE GO VERNMENT’S CAUTION. (By Telegraph.—Special to the Star). M ELLINGTON, Aug. 24. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister tor Lands, informed vour correspondent that the Government has had quite a number of properties ottered to it for purchase, but there is no business being done at present owing to the high prices. The opinion of the Minister is that although values have receded as a result of the slump, the subsequent high values of mutton and wool have been so quickly reflected in the prices of land suitable for this class of farming that there is not sufficient margin left to prevent trouble to settlers in case of another set-back.
