OBITUARY.

MR, JOHN GRYLLS. By the death at New Plymouth on Saturday of Mr John Grylls, at the age of 85 years, the ranks of Taranaki’s earliest pioneers were still furdepleted. Mr Grylls was born at Boyton, near liaunceston, on the border of Cornwall and Devon,, and landed at New Plymouth With his paring from the Amelia Thompson in 1841. When the Oamta block was opened in the early fifties his parents moved to that district, and, together with several other settlers’ sons, Mr. Grylls was sent for his education to the late Mr. IV. M. Crompton’s school. Un the outbreak of the war the Omata settlers’ residences were the first to be destroyed, and )Mr. Grylls at once joined up, being actively engaged on military service during the early .part of the war. When gold was discovered i°j ne d i n rush at Gabriel s Gully, moving subsequently Trnmru and Kaiapoi, and later stiil to Dunstan when gold was discovered "“®*e- returned to Taranaki about 01 a U P his residence on the couth Road, New Plymouth, where lie n 11 continuously until his death. Mr. Grylls was a man of sterling character, and Ins loss will be keenly felt by the large circle of friends whose respect and esteem he had earned He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. T. Leedom (Hawke’s Bay), Mrs. Walter Black (Hamilton), and Mrs. James Loveridge (New Plymouth).—Herald.
