PERSONAL ITEMS.

At a meeting of the board held subsequent to the annual general meeting of the Awatuna Co-op. Dairy Company on Saturday, Mr ; E. A. Collins was re-elected chairman of directors for the ensuing year. Mr W. H. Burgess, of Nelson, has been selected from a large list of applicants to fill the position of head*' master of the Opunake School, and Mr Eric M. Walden, of Wellington, has been appointed a special assistant at the school. Miss Stiller, who has been on the staff for some months, has been transferred to the West End School, New Plymouth. A general meeting of the Manaia town carnival queen was held on Saturday night for the purpose of arranging to hold a big gymkhana day on Wednesday, September 24, in the Manaia Domain, also at night a Taranaki championship tug-of-war, the same to be run on two nights, Wednesday, 24th, and Saturday, 27th. All details were outlined, arid strong committees with power to add were set up. Big money will be given for the tug-of-war, notice of which will appear in the Star at a future date. The next meeting to report progress will be held next Saturday night. The following were elected a committee for the tug-of-war; Messrs J. Russell, J. A. flanJ. O’Dea, j. Paterson, W. J. McDonald, and W. Opai. This committee to make all the necessary arrangements. Much sympathy ivas expressed in Manaia when the news of the death of Willie Keppell was received. He passed away on Saturday morning at the Ilawera Hospital. Deceased was the fifth son of Mr and Mrs M. Keppel, of Kaivpokonui, and was only in liis 24th year. He was of a. very quiet disposition, and was a great favourite with all who knew him. The funeral is to take place to-morroiv (Tuesday) leaving the Catholic Church at 2 p'.ni! for the Manaia Cemetery. The Hibernian Society members will attend. The greatest sympathy is extended to his sorrowing parents, brothers and sisters by the citizens of Manaia and district in their very sad bereavement.
