Argentina ranks first in South America- m telephone service, accordin'-/ to a statement by the national superin" tepclent ot telephones, states the Washington correspondent of the San Francisco Chronicle. Forty-two per cent, ot the telephone equipment in South America is m Argentina and the total line length represents 51 per cent, of South America’s total. Most of the telephones in use in Argentina are of English and American nianu actm-e, a largo percentage being made by an English branch of an American company. The service is concentrated in the provinces of Buenos • lies, Santa he, Corhoila. Entre Rios, Uomentes, Tiicuran, and the territory oi La Jbimpa. There arc 30.250 kilonictres of general service line within oic borders of Argentina, which, when added to the 640,151) kilometres used as private and railway lines, brings f or bbv Republic to b,(),loO. Over 700 district localities are served. It ( requires 70,000,000 Argentina pesos’ worth of equipment to carry out the needs of the service which, in turn yields an annual gross revenue of 17,000,000 pesos ancl furnishes employment- to 6900 employees.
