HAWERA BAND.
At- the meeting held this week to discuss band matters. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. L. A. Bone) stated that the Borough Council had set aside £2OO towards the upkeep of the band. There- were- a number of capable players in the town, and all they needed was organisation, teaching and practice. The council had decided that the band committee should consist of three members appointed by the council and three members appointed ■by the bandsmen, the chairman of the council band committee (Cr. J. Champion) to be ex-officio chairman of the hand committee. Mr. W. O. Hoddle drew attention to the poor attendance at the meeting, and said there did not seem to be the enthusiasm that existed in the old band. . They had enough instrumentalists in the town to form two bands, hut it now seemed they could not form one. On the motion of Messrs. W. Hawkins and C. F. Taylor, it- was decided that a Hiawera- Municipal Band be formed. The Mayor stated that probably applications would be called shortly throughout the- Dominion for a conductor. Mr. Hawkins pointed out that the band did not- have sufficient good instruments, only about eighteen being serviceable, and lie suggested that a citizens’ committee might- be formed to assist in this and other directions. Mr. J. Champion was elected secretary pro tern, and Messrs. W. Hawkins, C. F. Taylor and W. C. Hoddle a committee pro. tem. The names of Messrs. 0. E Taylor E. J Lacey W. Cook, C. Martin. N* A. Burrell, F. Baker, J. Kay and B Croueher were taken as certain members of the band, while the names of Messrs. M. Osborne, E. Eden, 11. LLaigh and Miles were taken as probable members.
• Last evening the committee met wlien various questions were discussed.
