TRAFFIC CONTROL.

AUCKLAND ADOPTS MODERN METHODS. IMMEDIATE ENFORCEMENT. Following on an official visit to Australia, the Auckland traffic inspector (Mr. Hogan)- has furnished a report to his council, containing many recomendations, all of which have been adopted, and are to be carried out forthwith. One of these recommendations provides that all tramears shall pull up within 26ft. of a corner where there ,is a .compulsory stop and to denote the stopping-place a fine or band of white marble is, to be fitted into the paved surface of tlie street. The object of this provision is to ensure that there shall be a space between the line and the corner for the convenience of pedestrians who wish ,to-cross the road. When a tramcar draws up right at the corner or overlapping it (as is very frequently the case in Wellington) pedestrians are often embarrased as to how to get across the street —whether to pass over immediately in front of the car or make a detour "and cross over behind it. Provision has also been made for the erection of “Go” and “Stop” semaphore arms,- which will, nelieve the officer on point duty of waving to direct the traffic. In addition “silent policemen” are to be provided at the less busy intersections to keep traffic strictly to its proper side of the road. Safety zones are also included in the new scheme, and standards are to be erected in certain places signifying whether such is a parking place or not. Still another provision is that motor-cars must not be left' stationary at the side of a street at a less distance than 60ft. from the' corner.
