Mr. and Mrs. Newton King arrived in New Plymouth last night after an absence of six months in England. ® r ' an d Mrs. D. E. Maunsell, of Manaia, arrived in Wellington on Wednesday by the Ulimaroa from Sydney.

Mr. T. M. Ball, district engineer for the Public Works Department, will leave Stratford on September 1 for Wellington in connection with the framing of estimates for roads, bridges and other public works within his district.

The death has occurred at Rawene of Mr. Thomas Hartley, a. well-known figure of the district, at the age of 95 years. The late Mr. Hartley was horn in Colne, Lancashire, and came to New Zealand in the ship Jubilee, rea.chin° f New Plymouth in June, 1873 He later transferred to Northern Wairoa, and m 1880 settled in Hokianga, where he stayed for the remainder, of his life.
