SIR JAMES CARROLL.
GREAT NATIVE GATHERING. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) HASTINGS, Aug. 20. A large gathering of natives assembled at Omahu Pa this morning and extended a reception to Sir James Carroll. who was offered congratulations on attaining his 67th birthday. In the course of speeches by chieftains, allusion was made to the'fact that it was at Omahu that “Timi Kara.” as a young man. was invited by Renata, Kawepo and others to represent the Maori race in Parliament, which, was the beginning of his brilliant political career, during which he held Cabinet rank for many years, and acted as Premier of the country during the temporary absence of the Hon. R. J. Sedden. Jn the afternoon a characteristic Maori welcome- was given to Lord and Lady Jellicoe. The National Anthem, sung in AJaori. followed by welcome, dances and young warriors with a famous haka. succeeded bv ;ioi dances and speeches of welcome and farewell. This evening they will he entertained at the meeting house, when addresses will he given in Maori by Parliamentary representatives.
