WAIMATE WEST COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the county was held yesterday, when there were present: Messrs. E. Long (chair), A. Gamlin, F. Mourie, W. H. Le Fleming. ,1. Leslie. J. Alclvay and J. F. Stevenson. The clerk (Mr. Hobday) and engineer were .also present. GENERAL. The clerk reported that he had advice from the State Advances office that they were forwarding amount for the construction at onc-e. The matter of diverting the water at the back of the factory on the Sheet- Load at the Kaupokonui factory was postponed pending a conference between the engineer and the company. The engineer reported that lie had received no reply:. A letter was received from the Manaia. Town Board stating that a ratepayer wished repair work to be done on Karaka Street, which was not even passable for foot traffic. The board added that they collected no rates and had no ratepayers on the street, but was agreeable to co-operate with the council in formation. —After some little discussion it was considered that it would be a- bad precedent to do such work, and the matter was .eft for consideration bv the works committee

On the motion of Or. Mon rie, seconded by Or. Le Fleming, it was resolved to give an order for 15.000 gallons of tar, to be increased if necessary to a maximum of .‘IO,OOO gallons. The clerk reported that two ratepayers whose rates were long in arrears had been proceeded against and reco\ ery made in one case, and that in similar cases further actions would follow.

Leslie Walters applied for slaughter license, and it was granted subject to the approval of the Agricultural Department. A suggestion was made that it should he just as essential to have inspection of all meat through ail abattoir as in a town.—The clerk said this had been brought un before, but it had been decided that the great costmade it impossible.—The matter was dropped and the license provisionally granted.

ft was resolved to make a grant of to towards the work of keeping the Otakeho Cemetery in oder. council in regard to the question of dealing up gorse near Bound Bush on road at his property.—The chairman said it was usual that the ratepayer should grub gorse up to half the width ol the road. The question of the leasing of unused roads was bound up in the request, said the chairman, and he added that as a fact no lease was given, but merely a right to use the grazing.

Mr ; Espiner also referred to a promise given two years ago that the county would supply metal'to do some oat-clnng on his road. —The -chairman ■mid these matters would have attention. and Cr. Gamlin and the engineer were deputed to look into the question and have it fixed. ■ heavy traffic.

In view of the importance of the subject of main highways and heavy traffic “vital to the county,” as one member said—-it was resolved to call a special meeting to consider the scale of charges submitted by the board. It was decided to meet on Saturday evening to go thoroughly into the question. MOTOR TRAFFIC. Hie question of dangerous,.corners due to high hedges was mentioned by Cr. Gamlin, who considered that in” view of the number of accidents more strict enforcement of the- by-law re cutting hedges should be observed. It was agreed that this should be clone. SOUTH TARANAKI POWER, BOARD. A delegation consisting of His Worship the Mayor of Hawefn (Air. L A Bone), Mr. R.. D, Welsh and Mr. B. AJaloiiG' attended to put the position ol the proposed electric power district before the council. Messrs.' Moldon (chairman), B. Howell, R. Craig, and N. O. limes (representing the Manaia Town Board)-were also present. After the position and conditions had been very fully and lucidly -put-, and many questions answered, a hearty vote of Lhanks was passed to the members of the delegation for attending to give details. Cr. Stevenson commended Mr. Bone for bis great interest in the scheme, Mr. Welsh for the thorough grip and grasp he had of the subject, Hid Air. Malone lor the excellent work he had done in providing plans of the area. ENG 1 NEER’S RFRO RT. c . The engineer reported that lie had jin i shod or tithing on the Upper 000 Hoad, ha vino; done 500 yards of boulders and refaced about ho chains with this metal. It would be ready lor tarring in the- summer. Some of the crushed metal will be put on top for maintenance. Work of this nature has been done on Mitchell, Oeo, Sheet, Auroa and Glen Roads. The Alain South Otakeho bridge as been retarred. Some days’ work has been done forming the road on to the new bridge over the Kaupokonui oil the Sheet Road. The Waiokura culvert lias been completed aiul the old bridge ovei Dunn’s creek pulled down and finished oil the new bridge. - The workmen have moved along the Sheet Road and are commencing on the Kau|jokoiiui bridge. Accounts totalling ClflOf ds lid were passed for pnymenl, nud the council adjourned.
