TERRITORIALS’ SERVICE.
NO HARDSHIP INVOLVED. (By Telegraph— Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14 Answering a question bv the member for Wanganui, who desires a relaxation of the regulations controlling territorials to provide relief in all cases m, which hardship is caused by compulsory service, the Minister of Defence states that it is considered advisable to retain the principle of allowing a magistrate to determine all such cases, as this leaves no room for fear or suspicion of partiality or victimisation, the procedure in connection with making an application to the magistrate is simple, and costs the trainee nothing, lhe 14 days’ notice which he is required to give •efore making application is no real hardship, for in the meantime any urgent, deserving cause can be dealt with by a grant of leave. It is therefore considered that there is no necessity to relax the regulations in this connection, as they already amply provide for the granting of exemption where it is deserved.
