A PROMOTER FINED
LONDON, Aug. 12. Major Wilson’s manager says the strain of promoting Saturday’s contest has caused Major Wilson to suffer a nervous breakdown. Acting on legal advice, Mrjor Wilson had instructed him to collect the receipts from the contest and disburse them as soon as possible. He agrees with Gibbous’ proposal that- the boxers in the preliminaries l;e first if the solicitors do not object-. Two of the contestants are stranded in London. Gibbons is issuing a- writ of attachment against the promoter, Major Wilson, for the recovery of £7060 outstanding of his share of the receipts at the Bloomfield contest, at which the attendance was far short of the expectations. It- is stated that the expenses of the contest- were £27,000, and the receipts are believed to have been far less. A PR OMOTEH ’ S P REDICA MENT. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION ) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. The Wellington boxing championships were concluded to-night before a packed house. C. Mcßae (Wellington) won the heavyweight title by default iirom F. Green (Auckland). T. Griffiths (Otago) was too clever for R. Hayward, and easily retained the bantam title. A. Hay (Hawke’s Bay) had a- hard contest with W 7. Walden (Wellington), but won the welter title bv his ability to use a straight left. J. G. Leckie (Otago) defeated. .T. Garvey (W 7 cs Coast) for the light heavyweight championship after "an even but rather uninteresting contest Drew (Otago) and P. Black made things willing in the featherweight bout, but the; Otago man steadied his opponent with an uppercut, and was stronger at the finish, winning well I). Loveridge, the Taranaki boxer, is the new lightweight champion after an epic contest with D. Tyowern (Auckland). The pain- fought- toe to toe the whole way. L. O’Neill easily retained the middleweight title against F. Paget (Southland). The latter was outclassed
SWIMMING.
SUBSIDY FOR SCHOOLS. WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. A deputation from the Wellington centre of the Swimming Association asked the Hon. R-. F. Bollard to increase the subsidy for teaching swimming in schools. It was stated the association was unable to continue with the present subsidy of £IOO. Mr Bollard said he would submit the request to- Cabinet.
