On Rugby Park this afternoon, belore' an attendance of between 3000 and 4000; the Canterhury touring team met Southland, and were defeated in a fair game by 18 points to 12. .The ground was in excellent order, and the weather was fine.

Southland kicked off against the wind, and for the first half of the opening spell the game ranged between the 25’s, the visitors having the advantage slightly till Murray, miskickmg, sent the balL to Cleiand, who scored a potted goal. Loose play ensued, when Elevey secured and ran down the line to score in the corner, the Southland backs seeming not to realise the clanger. Carlton’s kick failed. Eive minutes later Baird scored for the visitors, Carlton again lading. Play went to Canterbury’s 25, where an exdtng scramble took place and a score resulted. Dedrich failed, and the spell ended soon after with the score: Southland 7, Canterbury 6. In the second half both sides made efforts to get ahead. Play was much brighter, though very even. Half-way through, as the result- of wild kicking, Dennehy got possession on the corner and scored. Carlton failed with the kick. Eive minutes later, from a passing rush from the scrum Brown crossed at the corner flag, putting Southland in the lead by 10 points to 9. Agnew’s kick missed. Play was hardly going again before a further passing bout saw Archer cross Canterbury’s line, Agnew being again unsuccessful with the kick. A scrum in front of the home posts five minutes before time saw the hall go to Thomnson, who scored in the corner. Dennehy failed with the kick, and Southland'led by t 3 to 12.
