DIABETES.
I REPORTED NEW CURE. USE OF GLYCERINE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COP XRIGHT Received Aug. 14, 9.25 a.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 13. A message from Baltimore states that the important discovery that glvcenne may supplement insulin, and in some cases be substituted for it in the treatment of advanced cases of diabetes, has been made by Dr. John Hopkins, hospital physician The discovery is officially announced as a result of experiments, and, to some extent, by chance, when it was discovered that a patient who was being provided with insulin for daily injections was neglecting the treatment. Ihe patient was found temperamentally unfit to administer an injection of insulin, but made no objection when given glycerine as a daily diet in balanced doses. The patient, who was about to die from neglect of insulin made a prompt recovery after taking glycerine, and is now back at work on half-time.—Reuter. INTERESTING DISCOVERIES. _ , OTTAWA, Aug. 12. Large doses of insulin do not necessarily exert a proportionately greater curative power,"according to the results of experiments carried out by C. H. Best and R. G. Smith, as reported to the British Association Conference at Toronto. Working, with both noi mai and diabetic dogs, they found that a small dose of insulin of 10 units may exert as rapid and sustained effect upon the blood sugar in the normal dog as does a ten times greater quantity. Dr. E. Albritton, of Ohio University, declared that his researches disclosed * n healthy individuals sugar in .the blood causes the pancreas to discharge insulin into the blood. In diabetics this sugar accumulates and increases. The problem is to find what causes the pancreas to liberate insulin m an healthy animal.—Reuter.
