INSPECTOR’S DEATH.
ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER. (BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. Evidence for the prosecution in the manslaughter charge against Frank McDevitt, concerning the deatfi. of Traffic Inspector Cross on the Hutt road on April 26, .was concluded today. For the defence, Mr Sievewright said he intended to call the evidence of McDevitt and party, who left Trentham at 10 minutes to five. The accident would have taken place at 6 o’clock, according to the broken watch. The distance would he shown to be 10 1-3 miles, and the ...average speed must therefore have been 14 1-50 miles an hour. The accused, in evidence, said he went to get his car before the last race, which was run about 4.46. He left before 4.50, and had a non-stop run. He started at a very slow pace, increasing to about 18 or 20 miles at the entrance to the gorge. He slowed clown at the Hutt township, and was going so slow that his engine stalled on coming on to the bridge.
