•MANSLAUGHTER . CHARGE. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug 12. At the Supreme Court to-day the hearing was commenced of a charge of manslaughter against Frank McDevitt in coiienction with the death of traffic inspector William Cross, on the Hutt Roacl on April 26, when cars were ref turning from the Trentham races. The Crown Prosecutor said it would be shown "in the evidence that as soon as McDevitt left Trentham he commenced speeding. At Kaiwarra there u-as a disc notifying that speed should be reduced to 12 miles per hour. It was alleged that after the disc was passed, and when Cross was struck, the car was travelling between 20 and 26 miles per hour. Passengers would say that accused was on the wrong side of the road passing cars all the way from Trentham, and passengers spoke to him of his excessive speeds The evidence is being heard.
