THE LEAGUE CAME.

ENGLISH TEAM. STRONG COMMENT BY MANAGER (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 11. Speaking at the civic reception to the English League team this evening, Mr J. H. Dannett (the manager) commented on the poor spirit shown in the Dominion in connection with the League game. The Chinese had been handed, out a hearty welcome, but the British League team had been fSrned down. The League players, although professionals in the eyes of the Rugby Union, did not want to be professionals, added Mr Dannett. The League players were not paid as were members of the Rugby Union, where players were paid by the week and not by the match, as was the case with League players. The treatment which had been handed out to the English team by some of the so-called sportsmen of the Rugby Union was not pleasant. “The’ lily-white Rugby Union!” he said. There was no more polluted game in the world than Rugby. The League paid its players on top of the table and not under the table. Dr. Thacker, who was one of the speakers, said he had a letter from Manawatu, which stated that the whole of the Rugby teams in the Manawatu were going to go over to League next season. He and others had been invited to visit the Manawatu and start the code there. The writer of the letter to him was P. J. Jack, of Foxton.
