DISQUALIFIED FOR YEAR. 8? CABLE —PEES*; ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT SYDNEY. Aug. IE The stipendiary stewards inquired into the running of Royal Despatch in the first division of the Maiden Handicap at Canterbury Park on Saturday, in which Rbyal Desptach ran unplaced. After hearing the evidence they found the trainer (F. D. Jones) and the rider (M. McCarten) guilty of improper practices under rule 171, and disqualified each of them for a period of twelve months. The stewards decided to give Knight, the owner, who is in New Zealand, an opportunity of attending to show cause why Royal Despatch should not be similarly dealt with. NOTICE OP APPEAL. S1 T DNEY T , Aug. 11. McCarten and Jones have both given notice of appeal. [The following paragraph appeared in the Chronicle’s sporting notes last Wednesday: Private correspondence received in Christchurch a few days ago in regard to the enquiry into the running of Royal Despatch (one of F. D. Jones’ team) at Moorfield would suggest that the authorities are keeping vigilant watch on the New Zealand division. E. Lowe, who rode Royal Despatch, has been riding for J. McConibe in Sydney, but it was proved beyond doubt that Royal Despatch was a genuine trier. Indeed, Lowe rode the horse to a standstill, and the latter -was so sore afterwards as to need easing up for a few weeks.] NORTH TARANAKI HUNT. SATISFACTORY NOMI NATIONS. At the annual meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, the chairman said the club last, year paid £77,957 in X e onn a,ul tnxalio ' l - The sum of £90,33.. was paid in taxes, being onesixth of the total taxes paid by all racing clubs in New Zealand. After deducting stakes and the tax paid by owners, the Government received £ls- - more than was actually paid to owners—a most, inequitable proposition. Inless the Government reduced the amount of the racing tax, it would be only a question of time when many clubs must go under. After the minor improvements now being made at Ellerslie were completed, the club proposed to erect on the hill a people’s stand on the lines of the members’ stand.

DISQUALIFICATIONS. ECHO' OF TROTTING SCANDALS. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 12. The New Zealand Trotting Association decided: “That after carefully reviewing all the evidence of previous statements by, Bennett, and the fact that he voluntarily corrected his false statement before the case was heard in the Supreme Court, this meeting is of the opinion that justice will be met by inflicting upon Bennett a disqualification of two years from August 1 1924.” Charles Ireland and Hastings were disqualified for life for corrupt practices, and James R. Devereaux was disqualified for five years for corrupt practices. BRANDING TROTTERS. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 11. At a meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association tonight a letter was received from the Director of the Live Stock Division of the Department of Agriculture, acknowledging receipt of the association’s letter of July 29, in which it was stated that- tlie association was desirous of registering the brand “N.Z.’’ for the purpose of branding all trotting horses throughout New Zealand. After quoting the provisions of the Stock Act dealing with the question, the director said he regretted that while in sympathy with the principle behind the application he could not agree to the registration of the fire brand “N.Z.,” but if the association thought it would be of any assistance in the objects desired to brand each horse with the letters “N.Z.” on the hoof, no objection could then perhaps be taken to owners having a registered brand which they would apoly, and supply the association with a copy of it for .identification purposes, in conjunction with the letters “N.Z.” The letter was received.
