SETTLER ASSAULTED.

DANGEROUS MAN. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ) TE AWAMUTIT, Aug. 9. young Fiji Islander, George Whippy, alias Andrews, was afrested last night in the vestibule of the theatre in connection with an assault on a Pokuru settler named Bruce Anderson on Thursday evening. Whippy pleaded guilty before justices this morning. The police stated that Anderson remonstrated, and Whippy eil ou t of the gig, set upon Anderson violently, and then decamped. When the police spoke to Whippy last night lie tried to get away, but was chased and caught by Constable Boyle. The accused punched Doyle, but another constable came up, and the man was secured. A month's imprisonment was imposed, the lustices remarking that Whippy was a menace to the eommnmty. The police stated he had been living with the district- Maoris and was suspected of .supplying them with liquor.
