And the lady did not oven call nut "Gardy loo!’’ as they used to do in E<l inborn’' in the days before drainage, when every housemaid used to throw the slops out of the window, and it was always wise to jump when you heard, her warning cry* (from the French, “Look out for water!’’) or else always walk with your umbrella up. A •few mornings ago (says the Auckland Star) an immaculately-attired man, even to spats and gloves and a cane, was strolling down Symonds street just before 9 o’clock, evidently bound for business or to keep some important appointment. Just‘as he got opposite a two-storeyed building there was a “swish” from the balcony, and if it had been aimed at the unsuspecting pedestrian the bowl of water could not have hit him more squarely. His geL up was ruined for the day at least. Shaking the drops from his eves, he halted, looked up in the direction of the “bolt from the blue,” and seemed to hesitate. A bystander naturally expected a wrathful man to hoo un the steps, ring furiously at the hell* and relieve his feelings by saying what he thought of the matter of* window-cum-balcony drainage. Perhaps he meditated on the fact that it takes some time to sort out flat-dwellers, or perhaps there may have been in his composition some of the ingredients of a saint, for he turned on his heel and walked back to his boardinghouse, where, no doubt, he made a second toilet. The bystander had not time to see whether the gentleman, when he again emerged, kept his eve on the balcony or passed by on the’other side. / Rheumo quickly relieves Theumatism { by removing the cause; 4/6. —Advt.
