FOUND GUILTY
WELLINGTON CASE. (by telegraph—press association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. Joseph Barnes, found guilty on the charge of manslaughter in connection with the death of Walter John Whale on May 1, was sentenced to ten years’ with hard labour. Counsel referred to prisoner’s good war record. He had been rejected 1 in Australia, but had gone to England and served at the front, being wounded and gassed there. There was no premeditation of the crime. The man was of good character. , dustice MacGregor said that prisoner had enticed away the wife of deceased, and deceased naturally’resented it, and more than once thrashed prisoner. The jury had taken a merciful view that prisoner had acted under provocation; none the less he had killed a fellowbeing, and the use of a knife must be put au end to. It was his plain duty to inflict a substantial penalty. If prisoner had been an older man he may have had to inflict imprisonment for life.
