THE LEAGUE GAME.
NEW ZEALAND DEFEATS ENGLAND. (BY TELEGR APH —PRESS A8SOCIA1ION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 6. New Zealand defeated the English League team to-day by 13 to 11 in a last-minute victory. The match was played in a southerly gale, and 400(1 were present. Rax (England) scored first, and Pollard failed to convert. Carr (England) scored next, Poison failing to convert. Carr then made a splendid opening for Howley to get over, and Thompson converted, the half-time score being: England 11, New Zealand nil. After the kick-off New Zealand became aggressive. The forwards booted the ball over the line, and Mullins scored. Dufty missed with the kick. Pollard and O’Brien dived over, the latter scoring, and Dufty goaled. * The Englishmen fought pluckilv, hut the game was somewhat rough at times, players being cautioned. After excitmg play Dufty fielded a long kick and sent the ball to Carr, who failed to take it. Brisbane dashed up and scored, Dufty converting, making the final score: New Zealand ' 13 England n
RUGBY.
EXCITING COLLEGE MATCH. WANGANUI, Aug. 6. The annual school match, Palmerston North Boys’ High School v. Wanganui Technical College, was played to-day in dry but wintry weather, the ground being in fine order. The first spell ended 5 to 3 in favour of Palmerston. In the second half Wanganui added two tries and a penalty goal, but the visitors rallied and scored two tries in the concluding stages. The last try was obtained on time, and the kick failing, Wanganui won a good game by the margin of one point, the score being 12 to 11. WIN FOR WELLINGTON COLLEGE WELLINGTON, Aug. 6. After a keenly fought game Wellington College defeated St. Patrick’s College to-day by 30 points to 9. PRIMARY SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT. An interesting event will take place at New Plymouth on Saturday, when primary school teams from all districts will participate in a tournament. Tt is one that deserves the greatest encouragement, for these boys will be the seniors and reps, of the future. The matches will be: North v Coast, South v. Central, North v. Central, Coast v. South, Coast v. Central, North v. South. At Pukekura Park from 1.30 to 3.30 p.m. semi-finals and final will lie played.
