EARTHQUAKE.

PROLONGED SHOCK. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION ) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 7. A sharp prolonged earthquake, preceded by a loud rumble, was experienced ;it 4.43 a.m. A prolonged earthquake was felt in Hawera at about- 4.00 this morning. The shock, of about 80 seconds duration, was felt in the Kaponga district. While sharp enough to rouse most people from their slumbers, the dock did not result in any damage. It was preceded by a. prolonged rumbling noise lasting for over two minutes. It is interesting to note that the direction of the vvind was from the south. The barometric - ressure is low.
