GOITRE PREVENTION.
lODINE FOR THE SCHOOLS. (By Telegraph—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 6. Practical steps are being taken by the Health Department to deal with goitre in schools, and. an order has been placed by the department for the supply of a large quantity of iodine tablets, amounting to some hundreds of thousands in number, for use in those schools where goitre is most prevalent. This form of treatment has already been commenced. The subject of goitre generally is to be discussed at a departmental conference in a few days’ time, at which Dr. Hercus, Professor of Pathology in the Otago University, who has been specialising in goitre research, will meet the Government medical officers. It is understood that the principal subject for discussion will be the deficiency of iodine in salt, and that a proposal will be submitted for placing iodine salt on the market for the use of the public.
