LABOUR COSTS.
DAY VERSUS CONTRACT. STARTLING DISCREPANCY. BY CABJLE—PRESS ABSOCIATION-COPYBIGUT SYDNEY, Aug. 6. A startling discrepancy between the cost of day and contract labour was disclosed when the City Council accepted the tender of a private contractor of £8463 for laying underground electric cables, rejecting the city electrio department’s estimate of £14,280 for completing the work by day labour. Even the Labour aldermen were perturbed at the disparity between the prices, and contended that ■ something was radically wrong with the management of the department. Reform aldermen contended that concessions to city workmen had been so excessive that the general public was unfairly paying many thousands of pounds annually. Investigation into the position was ordered.
