CANTERBURY MARKETS. (BY I’tLEQKAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. ' CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 5. The advance in the potato market last week was of brief duration As a matter of fact it was scarcely so pronounced as represented, and was due not to any consumptive demand for tubers, hut to a few merchants having to cover forward sales. The absence of the actual potatoes compelled them to pay what was obviously a high price There was an easing through the week’ and f.o.h. (sacks m) values are now £5 10s, as against £5 15s at the weekend. Farmers are offering more freely and accepting £4 to £4 os a ton. Consignments are steadily coming from Australia, and -Canterburv shipments are small. The Opihi has taken a. small cargo for New Plymouth, mostly from southern, ports, and the Wanaka is due to sail from Lyttelton for Auckland on Friday. As a rule the attitude of farmers after the Grand National holiday indicates the quantities held by them. Offerings, if the potatoes are held, become freer after that time. Oats are still moving upwards from 5s 9d to 5s lOd for B’s, and from 6s 3d to 6s 4d for A’s, f.0.h., sacks in, has been quoted for forward oats. Values to farmers are from 5s 3d to os on trucks. Chaff is firm at from £6 15s to £7 a ton on trucks. There is a fair retail business in cowgrass. Values to farmers are up to 9cl per lb. AUCKLAND SHAREMARKET.
