CRICKET.
GROUPING SCHEME FOR, HAWKE CUP. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 4. At a meting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council to-night it was decided in regard to the Hawke Cup that a tentative grouping scheme be suggested to associations, replies to the council to be received within two weeks of the date of circulars being sent out. It was decided that play in the group system should* be finished by December 15 and that matches be played on the knock-out system. . Correspondence was received respecting a; proposal that the English team to visit Australia should also visit New Zealand. Mr. H, D. Swan, representing the New Zealand Association in London, stated that one of the difficulties in the way was the necessity of players being back in Britain lor the following season. It was suggested that a representative of the council should go over to Sydney to confer with Air. Toone, manager for the A1.0.C. team, and Board of Control, with a view to discussing the matter. A letter from the Australian Board of Control stated that the only way to allow of the visit was to cancel the return match against South Australia at Adelaide, due to be .played on March 13, thus- Jeaving the team free to sail from Sydney on the night of Afarch 7.
The council decided to hold over the matter for a week to allow the secretary to ascertain if the projected departures of steamers for San Francisco would enable such a tour to be arranged.
