RICCARTON NOTES. YESTERDAY’S TRAINING OPERATIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 5. Weather conditions were unpleasant for training at Riccarton this morning. Much interest was taken in the appearance of Income when he-went out for his first school over hurdles. He jumped • very badly, Boomerday beating him easily over each obstacle, while he hit the fourth flight pretty hard. It was a poor effort and very disapopinting to liis Grand National admirers. Boomerday, Income land Silent King started off for a school over four hurdles. Silent King made a bad jump at the first obstacle and lost his rider. The other two went on, Boomerday giving a satisfactory display. There are many novices at Riccarton that could easily account for Income over a round if this was his
true form this morning. Prince Ferouz and Los Ambus jumped away from the five furlongs and crossed the line in 1.4 3-5, being together all the way, with both doing well. The former had the better of the weights. Sir Rosebery easily held San Forte in the run home after leaving a mile behind in 1.53 1-5. Omahu and Bo nib rook gave a good exhibition of jumping in a school over four hurdles. Bo nib rook was then pulled up, but Omahu went on for another round. He continued to jump well, but this time he did not go nearly so fast. Royal Star and Le Forte were companions over a mile and a quarter, the last mile being run in 1.512-5. They finished together, but Royal Star could have done better. Mettle Drift and IVapping jumped away from the nine furlong disc, but over the last two furlongs the latter easily beat his stable companion, running the distance in '2.6 2-5. Lochella alone covered two miles at better than three-quarters pace. Paul Pry galloped seven furlongs in 1.40. Knocklvn badly heat lhapotoa over five furlongs, run in 1.4 4-5, but the latter is a bad track worker. Jack Kilrain ran half a mile in 51.2-ssees, and IVeeta got through the similar task. Moorland was going easily .at the end of a useful spin over five’furlongs. Lady Gay and Ginntkiller were companions in a sprint. Pamplona, mid Ravenna separately did useful work on the sand. Santiago went twice, round on the sand at a sound pace. Oakleigh and Galway covered the last mile of a mile and a quarter in 1.55 2-5. Coch-y-Bomhi heat Chickwheat over half a mil© in ol^sec.
Polthogue and Tinokaha. went well in a school over four hurdles. 1\ arseer, Ivilcannick and Hyperion sprinted half a mile together. Tiger land and Sayonara covered a mile in 1.53, finishing together. Girim Joke heat 1 otist very easily over seven furlongs in 1.37. 'laralga and (.'assets jumped the fences on the course proper, giving a good showing. Boadicea ran seven furlongs in 1.32. Winkie’s Best was to have joined in for the last five, but he broke away too soon and Boadicea. was never quite able to get on terms. Dame Strait]ace was given a working gallop over about six furlongs, the last half mile taking 54sec. Te Anau Lad and a companion covered six furlongs in 1.22. Tussore did useful work over six furlongs. Rivalry and Barn Owl were practically on terms all the way when leaving six furlongs behind in 1.18, both doing it Well. M inning Hit, assisted by Hungry Bill over the last four furlongs and a half, galloped seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5. Both had light boys up. Deucalion and Tiff occupied lmin 34 sec. over seven furlongs, and could have done better at the finish. Carawoek was given a couple of steady circuits on the sand. Ruby Ring and Demand ran down from the half mile mark very easily in 57sec. Palestrina and Lucfnette word together all through a mile gallop, run in 1.47, but Palestrina was going easily at the finish. Bullford jumped four hurdles, giving a good exhibition at- a sound pace. Avispado and Prompter were together after running five furlongs in 1.5 4-6. Clareina and the Polymnian were on terms at the end of seven furlongs run in 1.33. Dick was tried at the first of the kennels double, but could not be persuaded to jump it. OPUNAKE! RACING CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the above club was held on Thursday night, Mr. J. M. Hickey (vice-presi-dent) presiding in the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr. Alan Good).
At the commencement of the meeting a vote of condolence was passed to the Stevenson family in their recent bereavement, and to Mr. Simpson, whose mother died during the year. The annual report and balancesheet were presented and adopted on the motion of Messrs. Hickey and Richards. The report stated, inter alia: The most formidable item of the improvements scheme, the new grandstand, was completed in time for the last race meeting. The building is entirely of concrete, and includes a water supply constructed of the same material and with a 4000 gallon capacity. The carrying out of this work resulted in considerable damage to the lawn and paddocks, through the carting of large quantities of shingle and cement, and left us with rather dusty conditions for the meeting. This, however, is being remedied. The whole of the enclosures, viz., the lawn,, birdcage, saddling; paddock', outside enclosure, and motor paddock are now under the plough, and after a considerable amount of grading will be sewn down in suitable grasses. The training track is also' being ploughed up and regraded. Your committee have decided to remove the totalisator house to a site midway between the outside grandstand and booth. The building will be much enlarged, and disposed at such an angle ias will give an uninterrupted view of the investments from almost. - all points of the lawn. The committee’s afforestation efforts are proving a success, and most of the trees, planted last year are doing well. Better results could be obtained if the club possessed a permanent caretaker to. give the necessary attention. Your chairman of committee .and secretary, as part of a delegation, .shared the honour of an interview with the Premier recently, on questions affecting facing, and received a sympathetic hearing.
A Giaming Amendment Act is to come forward any day now, and an increase in permits will be asked for. Should the issue of further permits be granted, your committee have every reason to believe that the claims of the club for a second day will be one of the first to he considered. The chief items of expenditure for the year were the Government taxes totalling £2143 5s Id, made tip as follows: Totalisiator tax £671, dividend tax £1207 18s, stakes tax' £125 privileges tax £3O 7s 7d, amusement tax £lO6 9s lOd, land tax £2 9s 8d Other items were: Stakes £1250, improvements to course £4823 9s 9d and general expenses £4BO 15s 4d. A resolution passed at a special general. meeting of members on July 17 that rule 55 be amended so as to include the following, clause: No member of the club shall derive any pecuniary gain within the Incorporated Societies’ Act, 1908, from surplus property or assets of the club was confirmed.
The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. A. Good; vice-presi-dent, Mr. J. M. Hickey, senr. Committee— J. P. Burton, E. S. Forsyth (chairman). F. Julian, D. Campbell," S. J. Richards, A. H. Stevenson. A. F. Neilson, D. Harrop and J. Your.g. The same members were elected stewards. The following new 7 members were elected: Reg. C. Baker, 11. IV. Barraelough, C. O. Edmonds, H. H. Henderson, D. IV. Hickey,- D. M. Holmes mud M. IV. Priest. Mr. D. Markham was again appointed auditor and Mr. G. BarrBrown treasurer. Eulogistic references were made to the excellent work of the secretary during the past year, and on the motion of Messrs. Hickey and Simpson he was voted 20 guineas as a mark of appreciation. On the motion of Messrs. Simpson and Duffy a vote of thanks it as passed to. officials for good work done during the year.—Time*.
