SEEKING INFORMATION. INQUIRIES FROM TRADE UNIONS. (by TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION .) WELLINGTON, July 27. A letter has been received blv several local trades unions from the Commissioner of Taxes, asking for certain information regarding members. The letter states: .“I have to ask you to be good enough to furnish me with a list showing the full names and addresses of the members, of your union for checking purposes. The information is required under the provisions of section 163 of the Land and Income Tax Act. Uk!:-:/’ The section of the Act referred to states that every person shall from time to time as required by the Commissioner furnish in writing any information or produce any books or documents relating to aiiv land and income return ,or assessment (including lists of the shareholders of companies with the amount of capital contributed, the dividends paid to each shareholder, copies of balance-sheets, profit and loss and other accounts), which may be in his knowledge, possession or control. - It is understood that the letter, which has caused considerable discussion in Labour circles, will be referred to a meeting of the Trades and Labour Council with a view to deciding what action will be taken. The attention of the Labour members of Parliament has . also been drawn to the letter.
