Cr Carter moved the adoption of the Works Committee’s report, and explained that the footpath down the Mountain road was needed, and some £2B 10s had been provided by the Poppy Day collection to be spent oil some permanent work within the borough. The total cost of the work would be £Bs.—Cr King seconded. Cr Bridger said that it appeared to him to lie an injustice to the older part of the borough that had waited a long time for their footpaths to be kerbed and metalled and were entitled to consideration ahead of this new street. He viewed the work as a great necessity, but maintained that it should be -done in its right turn. He suggested that the matter be held over until the annual inspection of the borough by the members of the council.
The Mayor thought that the matter should be held over as suggested. Cr Nairn said that he agreed with Cr Bridger’s remarks. He. was not opposed to the work, but thought it should receive attention in its proper turn. He moved that the matter be held over pending the inspection.—Cr Bridger seconded, and on being put the motion was declared lost.
The report was then adopted. Cr Bridger reported that he had visited Wellington as the council’s representative on the delegation to the Prime Minister and Minister for Public Works concerning the Taranaki-Auck-land railway, and said that in his opinion the deputation was well worth the money and time spent on it, as there could be no doubt that the delegation produced a good impression by its united provincial action in asking for the early completion of the Tara-naki-Auckland railway. The Inspector reported that lie had made his usual monthly inspection of the borough, and found things in very good order. There were a good number of empty tins which he ordered to be removed; and a few other complaints, ? The Health Inss-ector repoted: Two cases of diphtheria" were removed to the hospital, and precautionary measures were taken against the spread of the disease. The three auction marts were inspected, and found to he in good order.
