PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mr. E. H. Thomas was elected chairman of the Eltham Fire Board at the first meeting of that body yesterday afternoon. Mr. H. D. Thomson (Under-Secretary of Immigration), who ha s been on a short visit to New 7 Plymouth in connection with the boy immigrants to Taranaki, returned to Wellington by the mail train this morning. Mr Thomas Walsh, of Sheet road, Kapuni, was the only nominee for the vacancy on the Hawera- County Council, caused by the resignation of Cr R . J. Linn, and consequently Mr Walsh has been declared elected. Mr Walsh’s nominators were Messrs T. O’Dowd and B. McCarthy.
A large number of friends gathered at the railway station this morning to bkl farewell to Mr. A. H. West, who left for Palmerston North to join the other members of the New 7 Zealand Rugby representatives. Mr. 11. Brow'n’s father, w 7 as also a passenger by the train, and on behalf of his son that gentleman was the recipient of a gold watch donated by Hawera friends. Clieers were given'as the train left a local enthusiast being exceptionally busy with a camera.
