PERVERTED JUSTICE.
TRIALS IN AMERICA. BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT. Received Julv 24, 12.10 p.m. NEW' YORK, July 23. Commenting on the prime Commission statistics, the Chicago Tribune says: “Criminal justice in America lias become a Roman holiday, and the courts are a. coliseum. British law is infinitely superior for conducting i^pls.” It adds: “The injury to justice is in the publicity before the trial. Newspaper trials before a case is called have become an abomination. Journalistic lynch, law is the irnle, and prosecuting attorneys have now to hasten to the newspapers with their theories and confessions. Tlie defence attorneys do the same, and neither dare do otherwise, and half-witted juries or prejudiced juries .are inevitable.” The Tribune admits that it shares the blame,' and insists that no newspaper can escape? it. There is, it says, one remedy—a. drastic restriction of, publicity before trial must be imposed by law.—Sydney Sun Cable.
