OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) SACRED CONCERT, The first of a series of sacred concerts in aid of the funds of the Federal Band was given on Sunday evening, and was a most successful function in every way. The programme was mainly instrumental, and the rendering of the selections by the band were highly appreciated. The opening item was a selection by the band, “Poet and Peasant,’’ followed by a solo by bandsman J. Alaindonald, “Ora Pro Nobis.” The cornet duet by Alessrs C. Humphries and F. Langton was an item of merit that met with rounds of applause. Airs. Church, who made her first appearance before a local audience, sang delightfully an aria from the opera “La Prodige”; in response to an emphatic recall she was equally appreciated ’in her singing of “Songs Alv Alother Taught Me.” An instrumental double quartette by bandsmen was a popular item. A double quartette by local natives, “Rock of Ages,” was recalled. A duet by J. Humphries (cornet) and C. Cave (trombone) was perhaps one of the best instrumental items. In addition to those enumerated the band also played two very fine selections. If the succeeding concerts are up to the high standard set on this occasion the band fund should largely benefit. In the unavoidable absence of the president (AOr. .F. Julian), Air. jN. Andrews expressed thanks on behalf, of the band committee for the generous support of the public on this occasion, and expressed the hope that future attendances would be still larger.
