RAWHITIROA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) In the s hort respite the farmer gets in mid-winter he seems to be learning to make the most of his opportunities for a. little social recreation. Life in this district lately has been almost gay with a succession of concerts, euchre parties, and football matches. The euchre parties are held weekly, and have been well patronised this winter; and as they- are conducted bv the hall committee, with the object of raising funds for the proper upkeep and improvement of the hall, they are worthy of the support they get. " It is hoped to paint and thoroughly renovate the hall before long. Last Friday the winners of the prizes were Airs. O. Gernhoefer and AI aster Davey Knuckev. Much latent energy gathers' among the farmers in the off season, and finds an outlet Intelv in the more popular than ever game of football. The 'two s ides, married and single, have each had a win. and special interest is taken in a match to he held on Thursday next, each side feeling sure of victory. In two games against Mangamingi the local players have been victorious, and this has added to their enthusiasm. The schoolboys have not been so fortunate, being a weak team this year. It is hoped they- will receive some efficient coaching from their elders. Un Monday snow fell briskly for the first time for some years, and the weather is typ’cnl of mid-winter. The grass has vanished very quickly, and all who have good root- crops are to lie congratulated. The school children did well in the Boys’ and Girls’ Club section at the Dominion Winter Show, winning five out of a possible six prizes in their group for carrots and mangolds, including first and champion for carrots. The latter seem to do well in Ibis district.

Anything in connection with school matters is well supported hv the parents, here, an t l the latest working bee provided an ample supply of pine wood tor school fires. A concert given by ElLham talent a month ago was such a. success that it is proposed to hold another shortly in aid of school funds. As a result of the school show held last year the children now enjoy the possession of an excellent piano, and visiting singers also appreciate the Quince. There lm.s boon the usual change of occupants on many of the farms recently. AN are glad when the settling down process is over, and wish good luck to the newcomers. Weddings are not free went here, .so f hat of Air. \\ . C. Belcher to Aliss Tiplndv. of Eltham, last week roused mo’-e than ordinary interest.
