. OLD IDENTITY. A NEW PLYMOUTH RESIDENT. tBY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 23. The sudden dentil occurred this morning of Mr C. F. Foote, a very old resident- and managing clerk for Mr\R. C. Hughes, solicitor, in whose employ he has been for about fifty years. Mr I oote Was in his usual health and culled at his son-in-law’s house on his way to work, but collapsed while waiting on the verandah. He had some gastric trouble two o>r three years ago, but latterly appeared to be' in good health. He was about 65 years of age. [The late Mr Foote was the son of two of New Plymouth’s earliest settlers, his father having kept- the old Ship Hotel'(now the Criterion) in the days when the best part of the town was a grass paddock. His mother was a Miss Hamblyu, whose home, was at the Waiwakaiho before her marriage. Air Fred Foote was well known and respected in Taranaki, and his sudden death will be a shock to his many friends.] A GREAT SCULPTOR. Received July 23, 12.5 p.m. LONDON, July 22. The death is recorded of the sculptor Albert Bruce-Joy, R.H.A., E.R.G.S. The late Air. Bruce-Joy was horn in Dublin and was a brother of George IV. Joy, painter. He received the only award for busts in the Salon in 1896, and was ' awarded one of the three medals allowed to British sculpture at the Paris International Exhibition in 1878, and also received medals at other international exhibitions. He made many public statues, chiefly colossal, the figures including Gladstone and John Bright. SIR WILLIAM HERD At AN. Received July 23, 11.25 a.m. LONDON, July 22. The death is recorded of Sir William Herdman. zoologist.—Reuter. [The late Sir William Herdman was born in Edinburgh in 1858. and was professor of natural history at the University of Liverpool since iBBI. He was president of the zoological section of the British Association in. 1895, and was general secretary to the association in 1905. Along with others he established a marine biological station at Port Erin, Isle of Alan, and a sea fish hatchery at Piel, near Barrow. He was also honorary director of scientific work to the Lancashire Sea Fisheries Committee. In 19D1-2 he was sent to Ceylon to investigate the pearl oyster fisheries for the Government. He lmblished a number of hooks and naners on zoo’ogical subjects.]
