JERSEY CATTLE CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. At Stratford yesterday there was a good attendance of members of the ~ Jersey Club, over whom Mr. F. Ranfovd presided. The annual report stated, inter alia, that there were now ninety-four members. The functions of the club had been carried out with success, and the aims and objects for which Jersey clubs were formed had been kept constantly in mind. The annual demonstration, with Mr. H. E. Watson as demonstrator, brought a- number of hreeders together and took the- form of similar functions on previous occasions. The thanks of the club were due to Mr. and Mrs. A. Faull for their kindness in placing their farm at the club’s disposal, and for assistance and hospitality extended. Thanks were also due to the sub-committee who undertook the arrangements, and to the breeders who brought stock for demonstration purposes. On the evening of the demonstration a supper was given in honour of the success achieved by Messrs E. O’Sullivan and Son s in winning the first Hawera Oaks. This resulted in the largest gathering yet held under the club’s auspices, and was well worthy of the occasion for which it was given. In conclusion, the executive hoped that the new year would he one of success to the club, and asked members to induce breeders to join and help promote the welfare of the Jersey in the Stratford district. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit balance of £4O Is. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president congratulated the club upon its strong financial position and the increased membership during the past year He hoped enthusiasm would be" maintained and that the attendance at all meetings would not fall off. He thanked the executive and the secretary for their enthusiastic support during the year. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr. F. Hanford j vice-president, Mr. D. O’Sullivan; committee, Messrs H. Hunt, E. Linnell, C. Jackson, D. P. Malone, and C. O’Sullivan. Mr. Ranford said he had intended retiring, as he was now farming, but as the members wished him to retain the office of president he had acceded to their request. The following remits were discussed and are to be sent on to the next meeting of the Provincial Jersey Council at New Plymouth: That vendors of cattle be required to guarantee the sire and the date of service (thirty days to be allowed either way for calving), such guarantee to be made on all entry forms for stud stock sales. That vendors of pig and other stock foods be requested to deliver with all such foods a true analysis of same and the constituents of the ingredients used in the manufacture. That representations he made to the Government out the desirability of prohibiting unqualified persons from practising as veterinary surgeons. \ otes of thanks were accorded the outgoing officers, the press, and all who had assisted in the working of the club. SMOKE CONCERT. INTERESTING EVENING. ' Though there were fewer present than there were last year at the annual social evening, the function was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Mr. F. Ranford (.president of the club) was in the chair, and in his usual happy way kept things moving and saw that everyone was well looked after. There wa s only a short toastlist, and speakers were all brief and to . the point’. ■ Alter the toast of His Majesty the King, the chairman gave “The Visit°rs.” Messrs Aylward and Amess, who responded, both stressed the good work being done by the association and tlie service the members were performing for the district and for the Dominion. “The Department of Agriculture” was proposed by Mr. C. Jackson, who complimented the officers on their, good work. I Lis, ho said, was a distinct credit to them and to their department. Mr. Cook briefly replied,' assuring all farmers that he would always be most glad to. do everything in his power for the farmers of the district. “The Ladies” was given by Mr. E. H. Linnell and resnonded to bv Mr Boon; “The Press,” by Mr. Hunt', “The Performers” and “The Hpst” were all enthusiastically honoured. During the evening a" very interestmg paper on “Improvement of Dairy ' Herds” was given by Mr. H. C Johnson, of .Stratford, and following on this questions were asked and answered. A very good programme of vocal and elocutionary items was given by Messrs Linnell, O’Sullivan, . Vincent, Moss, YValters, and Ban*. The accompaniments were played by Messrs Page and Ranford. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne* 7 and the National Anthem con- ; eluded very successful evening.
