TIMBER ROYALTIES.
WESTLAND PROTEST. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) HOKITIKA, July 22. The Westland County Council held a meeting to protest against the report, of the Royal Commission affecting timber royalties and resolved to convene a conference of the West Coast counties at Grevniouth on Augu'st 4 and invite representatives of the Government and the West Coast members of the Legislature to discuss the whole position. The opinion was expressed that the legal claims of local government were totally ignored by the report, which, if adopted, will have a disastrous effect on the future revenue of local bodies. It is proposed to ask the Government to defer discussion on the report pending a conference of North Island counties being asked to co-operate in the protest.
