Messrs 0. J. Hawken, M.F., and J Corrigan, M.P., returned to Wellington this morning. Mr H. D. Forsyth, of Eltliam, went to Wellington by this .morning’s express to attend ,to National Dairy Association business, .which will, be' conducted by the council this week. Mr M. McGarry, Eltham, left yesterday morning fei* Auckland, where he will represent the Taranaki branch of the Real Estate 1 Institute of New Zealand at the animal conference which is to be held this week. A resolution of symapthy with Mr \\ . Rogers, of Stratford, in the/ loss of passed by the Taranaki Education Board at its meeting yesterday Mir Rogers was a formemmember of the Hoard. Messrs A. S.. Hicks (.president of the North. Taranaki Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union) accompanied by .Mr S. Vickers. left for Wellington yesterday to attend the annual Dominion conference of the union. They were joined at Hawera by Mr R. Dunn, (president of the South lairanaki executive). Lieutenants L. J. Carmine, E. G. Coleman, and E. J. Thomas, of the Taranaki Regiment of the Territorials, have been gazetted captains (Ist Battalion) as from July 1- and Lieut. D. F. C. Saxon, of the Otago Regiment, has been gazetted Lieutenant of the Taranaki Regiment (Ist O Battalion), with seniority as from July 7. Mrs Gertrude Martin, head mistress at the Central School, New Plymouth, forwarded her resignation' to the Board yesterday. Mrs Martin has been school teaching in Taranaki for thirty years, and for twenty-two years has occupied the position from which she is resigning. During the whole of her teaching experience she has only been absent from duty for eight days. References of a highly complimentary nature were made to the work of the /retiring teacher, and the Board decided to record its appreciation of her services.

Mr J. C. McGregor, postmaster at Awakino, who left on promotion to a similar position at Ohakune Junction on Friday, was the recipient from the Awakino settlers of a beautiful set of silver inkstands, date-box,, etc., mounted on plate-glass, as a token of esteem and appreciation of services rendered in his public and private' capacities. Mrs McGregor was presented with a handsome inscribed silver cake dish. Appreciative reference was made to the great assistance rendered by both Mr and Mrs McGregor at musical functions.

Mr A. Lees’, term of office as chairman of the Taranaki Education-Hoard expired yesterday, and at the.conclusion of the formal business Mr Lees took the opportunity of thanking the Board members for the support he had received during his two years’ term as chairman. It was a distinct compliment, he said, that the four members \vho (retired this year were returned without opposition, for it showed that the people were satisfied with the way educational matters were conducted. Especially did he wish to thank the teachers, inspectors, board staff and school committees for the way in which they had co-operated with the board. Messrs R. Masters, M.P., P. J. t H. White, H. Dempsey, R. J. Deare 'and the chief inspector of schools (Mr J. A. Valentine) all paid tributes to the harmony and efficiency that had existed undeir the chairmanship of Mr Lees, particular reference being made to bis imoartialitv .in all matters that came before the Board. The next meeting will be the first meeting of the new Board, when the election of a chairman will take place.
