LOWGARTH.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) xi T n ie^ gerieral meetin S of the local ■Hall Society was held in the hall on luesday evening. Those present we're • Messrs J. L. Taylor, E. Kilbride, Pryce, Richardson, Slirimpton, AVillan, Johnston, E. A. Gray, Hunt, Mills, Sulzberger, and Thrush. Mr. J. L. Taylor, chairman of the committee presided. The chairman in his address gave some interesting statements in connection with the building of the hall and its general running. He stated that, having received a small donation that night, he had very much pleasure m announcing that the hall was now absolutely free of debt, (Applause.) Ihe chairman also wished to thank all those who assisted in any way towards the hall, especially> to those who spent no .end of time in helping to build, also to the ladies for their efforts in rallying round the committee at any and all times that their services were required. The . society’s thanks were also due to those residents who. reared a calf to he sold for the benefit of the hall funds. Altogether over thirty calves were reared, and realised the very, handsome sum of £56 ss. The chairman stressed the fact that the district had to he highly complimented on its successful achievement, for although the hall had only been opened eleven months, and the ‘total cost was £3OO 3s 2d, still to-day the hall stood an imposing structure' free of debt. Several improvements were still urgent, ly needed, and the committee also would need to go into the question of obtaining the electric light, a quotation for which had been received from the Taranaki Power Board. A series of fortnightly dances had been held and wete very successful, and it wa s hoped the local people would still rally round the committee, enabling, the committee to carry out some mueli-needed improvements
The following committee were elected for the ensuing year: Messrs F. Willan (chairman), H. Thrush,' A. Pryce, & Hunt, Iv. Mills, J L. Tavloi\ and E. Kilbride. The Salvation Army boys gave an interesting entertainment in the local hall on Monday evening. Quite a large and appreciative audience "turned out and were kept highly interested for a couple of hours. The line style of dross and general appearance of the hoy rs was freely commented on, and reflects credit on those on whom the responsibility falls.
The Finnerty Road school has received a much-needed coat of paint, which adds greatly to the general wellkept appearance of the school and grounds. 3he school committee have been at work and usefl every endeavour to get funds, and have secured for the school a piano, a much-needed requisite.
